The Institutional General Education Policy of the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, applicable to both bachelor’s and associate degree programs, is defined in Certification Number 2022-2023-26 of UPRA Academic Senate. This policy identifies a series of interdisciplinary competencies that all students will have developed upon completion of their university studies as a result of their holistic education: (a) oral and written communication skills in Spanish and English; (b) scientific reasoning skills; (c) critical thinking and reasoning skills; (d) information management skills; (e) technological skills; (f) historical and sociocultural knowledge; (g) environmental awareness; (h) cultural, aesthetic, and moral values; (i) collaborative work skills; (j) creative thinking skills; and (k) entrepreneurship skills.
All students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program must complete at least 42 credits in General Education, while those in an associate degree program must complete at least 18 credits. The specific minimum credit requirement for both degrees is outlined below.

All bachelor degree students will take six (6) credits in English while associate degree students will take three (3) credits. The courses will depend on their score in the English achievement section of the Evaluation Test for College Admissions (PEAU for its Spanish acronym).
